Bronx Bound

The Bronx once symbolized prestige, upward mobility, and opportunity in the first part of its history. But during the late 1950s thru the 1980s the borough became increasingly associated with , “danger”, “poverty”, “crime” and “negativity”. During this time to be Bronx bound ensured limits, boundaries, and the lack of opportunity; to its disenfranchised residents it became a prison. The borough came to represent the social-ills of American society-crime, drugs, disease and abandonment- all contained in this space, which was labeled, “The Burning Bronx”. There was no better way to sum up the implosion of this once magnificent example of progress, innovation and mobility.

Today, the ashes left behind nourish the soil of many grassroots movements and organizations in the borough, which aim to improve the quality of life of the borough and its residents. The seeds planted will ensure that the story of the borough is told and the lessons drawn will be the fruit by which a new generation will nourish itself. Currently, even with the upward movement of the borough, there are still many who feel bound to the Bronx out of a lack of choice and simultaneously proud of the place they call home. The X Collective sets out to explore and understand what it means to be, Bronx Bound.
